We all know how important sleep is to our overall health, but many of us have trouble getting the recommended amount of sleep. At Shifman, we’ve got a few tips to help you get a better night’s sleep and improve your overall wellbeing.
People that regularly exercise will sleep better and feel less sleepy during the day.
Support Your Body’s Natural Rhythms
Getting in sync with your body’s circadian rhythm is the most important strategy for achieving a better night’s rest. Circadian rhythm is our bodies’ natural sleep-wake cycle; if you keep a regular sleep-wake schedule, you’ll feel more refreshed and energized than if you sleep the same number of hours at different times. Try going to sleep and getting up at the same time every day, and avoid sleeping in—even on the weekends.
People that regularly exercise will sleep better and feel less sleepy during the day. Regular exercise helps to improve the symptoms of insomnia and sleep apnea, and also increases the amount of time you spend in the deep, restorative stages of sleep.
Wind Down and Clear Your Head
If you find that you’ve been unable to sleep, or have often been waking up during the night, it could be the cause of residual stress, worry, and anger from the previous day. If anxiety or chronic worry dominates your mind at night, there are a few things you can do to combat it and calm your mind. Before you go to sleep, write your thoughts down on paper. The more overstimulated your brain becomes during the day, the harder it can be to slow it down at night. Many of us over-stress our brains by constantly interrupting tasks to check our phones, emails, or social media; set aside specific times for these activities and focus on one task at a time.
Monitor Your Exposure to Light
Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that’s controlled by light exposure. Melatonin helps to regulate your sleep-wake cycle. When it’s dark, your brain secretes more melatonin—making you sleepy. When it’s light out, your brain secretes less melatonin—making you more alert. During the day, expose yourself to bright sunlight in the morning, and spend more time outside during daylight. At night, avoid bright screens within one to two hours of your bed time, and say no to late-night television.
Obviously, the surface on which you sleep has a lot to do with the quality of rest you receive. If you’ve noticed that you’ve been waking up with pain, it may mean that it’s time to invest in a new mattress. At Shifman, we offer a wide selection of luxury mattress collections that vary in firmness and comfort levels—so there’s sure to be something for everyone. Our luxury mattresses are constructed with two sides, providing more value to the customers, as they can be flipped over time—offering the same level of comfort on each side. Our two-sided mattresses last twice as long as the standard one-sided mattress you’d find at the majority of sleep stores.
