Are you tired right now? The answer is probably yes, if you think about it. Many Americans report not getting enough sleep, feeling tired throughout the day, or at the very least needing caffeine to pretend otherwise! . We’ve shared with you before ways to get a better night’s sleep (including investing in a Shifman Mattress!), but now we’re going to tell you what a lack of sleep REALLY does to your body and how it can affect your day.
- You may have trouble thinking and concentrating
- You may be clumsier
- You may experience mood changes
- Your immune system may be weakened- so you’ll be more likely to catch colds, etc.
- Lack of sleep can even cause high blood pressure, weight gain, and increase your risk for diabetes or heart disease.
It’s pretty obvious a lack of sleep can cause minor or major problems. Eventually, you might even stop feeling sleepy and start thinking you can exist on less sleep than you really need. “‘Studies show that over time, people who are getting six hours of sleep, instead of seven or eight, begin to feel that they’ve adapted to that sleep deprivation-they’ve gotten used to it,’ Gehrman says. ‘But if you look at how they actually do on tests of mental alertness and performance, they continue to go downhill. So there’s a point in sleep deprivation when we lose touch with how impaired we are.’”
So what’s the takeaway? You need to get a better night’s sleep. How can you do that? Follow our tips from “Perfecting Your Bedtime Routine” [link], and consider purchasing a Shifman Mattress- it’s your first step to a better night’s sleep!
