What are the questions you should ask before purchasing a mattress?

What are the important things to look for while mattress shopping?

A two-sided mattress that can be flipped to provide many years of comfort, body support, and durability.

A mattress that meets Federal Flammability guidelines with no chemical treatment.

How long will my Shifman Mattress last?

Properly cared for, a Shifman mattress will provide many years of comfort and support for your sleeping needs.

If I have an issue with my mattress what should I do?

Contact the retailer where you bought your mattress.

Are your mattresses flame retardant?

Our mattresses and boxsprings are all flame retardant as required by federal law. Our flame retardant is not an applied chemical or spray, but rather a naturally derived cellulose/silica-based barrier fiber that meets the EPA standards for safety

Do your mattresses off-gas?

As with any product that is new, you may notice a slight odor when the mattress is removed from its packaging. This is normal, not harmful and will dissipate quickly.

Do you have a "green" organic mattress?

We have many mattresses in our assortment that contain natural materials. We do not have a “certified” organic mattress.

Why does Shifman Mattress Company use different coil types and coil gauges in their mattresses?

All of our mattresses use the very best coils available in the marketplace. We use different coil types and gauge of wire (thickness of the wire) to achieve different feels within our product line. All of our mattresses provide proper back and body support.

Why do the heights and width vary slightly?

Mattresses crafted by hand, may vary slightly during production. On a handcrafted mattress, the covers and upholstery materials are set in place and pulled tight by hand before it is sewn in place. These processes can cause a slight variation to the height or width. These variations are normal and have no impact on quality or comfort.

Will Shifman Mattresses work on an adjustable base?

Some of our mattresses are adjustable base compatible. This information is available from retailers carrying our products or on our website.

Can Shifman Mattresses be used on a platform bed?

Yes, some models can be used with a platform bed, but keep in mind this will cause your mattress to feel firmer than if it is placed on a boxspring.

Should I flip my Shifman Mattress?

Yes, you should flip and rotate your mattress on a regular basis to avoid any indentations or body impressions in the mattress. The product warranty card describes the proper way to do this. You may also visit shifman/warranty.com. Flipping and rotating your Shifman Mattress will provide many years of comfortable sleep.

Does Shifman sell directly to consumers?

Shifman does not sell direct to consumers. All products must be purchased through a certified retail partner.

Does Shifman have international partners?

Shifman does not currently have certified international partners. All products are solely available in the US through a certified retail partner at this time.

Does Shifman ensure that the natural materials being used are obtained through responsible and sustainable methods?

Shifman ensures that all-natural materials being used within its mattresses, including horsehair, wool, cashmere, etc. are ethically sourced.

Where are Shifman Mattresses manufactured?

All Shifman mattresses are manufactured in our factory located in Newark, New Jersey. By utilizing one factory, we are able to control the quality and precision of our manufacturing.

What are the dimensions of your beds?

We use industry standard sizes and also manufacture custom sizes.

How are your mattresses constructed?

All of our mattresses use the highest quality materials available in the industry. We are also one of the few companies that continue to make all of our products as two-sided mattresses.

I have owned my bed for a few weeks, why are there already impressions in my mattress?

Indentations in the mattress (body impressions) are normal within the first few weeks of owning a new mattress. Unlike many other mattresses, Shifman Mattresses can be flipped and rotated since they are two-sided helping to alleviate this occurrence. Body impressions of up to 1 ½ inch deep are normal, and are not a warranty concern. Please visit our mattress care page or our warranty page for more information.

What type of sheets do you recommend?

You can purchase sheets from any store or online retailer. Upon selecting, please make sure the sheets are designed for a deep pocket mattress. Deep pocket mattress sheets are designed for mattresses that are greater than 14” in height.

I want a mattress comparable to the one I have now, is that possible?

With all the changes today in upholstery composition, coil gauge and significant upgrades in materials, we are unable to provide a product that is exactly the same as the one you may have purchased several years ago. We strive to perfect our premium level of construction and offer the finest components available. Please visit a retailer near you to view mattresses currently offered.

Why is my mattress making a squeaking noise?

Most likely the noise is coming from the bed frame or cross slats of the bed. The best way to isolate the source of the noise is to lay the boxspring / foundation and the mattress on the floor separately. Then check each one separately.

Is there a break in period?

Yes, breaking in a new mattress takes time. As you continue to use your mattress, it will begin to conform to your body as the comfort materials break in.

Why does my mattress not feel like the one in the store?

The mattress in the store is a floor display. Generally, a displayed mattress has been on display for a lengthy time with quite a bit of wear and tear. Due to the many people that have tested the mattress, the comfort materials in the displayed mattress have settled. Should be have not has.

Importance of a Boxspring

Why is a boxspring important?

Boxspring coils conform to the natural contours of your body’s weight, absorbing impact and evenly distributing weight.

Do I need a new boxspring / foundation?

Placing a mattress on a rigid base forces it to conform to one shape and absorb all of the weight and pressure. In contrast, a true boxspring or foundation works with the mattress rather than against it, to distribute weight and movement, letting the body relax in ultimate comfort. The boxspring or foundation is the support for your mattress. If the boxspring or foundation is not supportive, it will cause the mattress to lose support and comfort. A boxspring or foundation that is worn out and unsupportive can void the new mattress warranty. Shifman always recommends purchasing a new matching boxspring or foundation with your mattress to provide proper support, comfort, and durability of your sleep set.

What are your boxsprings / foundations made of?

Shifman’s premium 8-way hand-tied boxsprings are made from sustainably sourced Canadian spruce, furniture grade upholstery coils, imported Italian twine, and features elegant metal corner guards, Belgian damask covers, as well as all-natural cotton padding. These boxsprings offer the unparalleled ability to transfer weight and absorb shock. And, with a variety of coils at our disposal, Shifman is able to offer any sleeper a boxspring that offers just the right amount of firmness they're looking for.

Do boxsprings come in different heights?

Shifman offers a standard sized (8” high) boxspring, as well as a low-profile option, which is 6” in height.

Proper Care

If a spill were to occur on my mattress, how should I take care of it?

If you spill liquid on your mattress, please follow the steps below. The mattress should never become wet. We cannot promise that these steps will completely remove the stain.

If you have a mattress cover or protector, remove this and, soak up as much of the liquid as possible on the mattress using a towel. This may require pressing down on the material with the towel(s) to release the moisture.
Once excess moisture is removed, let the mattress air dry. To speed up the drying process, use a fan facing the mattress so that it blows directly on the mattress.

Can I use an electric blanket or heating pad with my mattress?

We do not recommend using an electric blanket or heating pad with your mattress. Due to the temperature-sensitivity of the materials we use, adding high heat can hinder its ability to react to your body temperature and conform to your body shape. If you ever do use an electric blanket or heating pad, we recommend limiting its use to 30 minutes, and only on low or medium heat.

Do I have the right frame?

For queen and larger size mattresses, a heavy-duty metal frame with a rigid center support and leg(s) is required.

Do I need a mattress protector?

Mattress protectors are designed to inhibit dust mites, bed bugs, allergens, mold, mildew, bacteria and dead skin cells from building up in your mattress. The mattress protector will protect your investment. Mattresses that become stained or unsanitary will void the mattress warranty. Be advised the mattress protector or mattress pad may slightly alter the feel of your mattress.
